Brazil's Agribusiness Sector Sets New Export Records

Brazil's agribusiness sector has set new export records in the first half of 2026, with shipments of soy, beef, and sugar reaching their highest ever volumes, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Soy remains the country's most valuable agricultural export, with demand from China and other Asian markets continuing to grow. Brazilian farmers have expanded production into new areas of the cerrado, the vast tropical savanna that covers much of central Brazil.

Beef exports have also surged, driven by strong demand from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Brazil is the world's largest beef exporter, and the industry says it is working to improve traceability and sustainability standards to meet the requirements of increasingly demanding international buyers.

Sugar and ethanol exports have benefited from high global prices and growing interest in biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels. Brazil's sugarcane industry is one of the most efficient in the world, producing both food-grade sugar and fuel-grade ethanol from the same crop.

The record figures have been welcomed by the agricultural sector, but they have also renewed debate about the environmental cost of agricultural expansion. Critics argue that new farmland is being created at the expense of native vegetation, contributing to biodiversity loss and carbon emissions.

The government says it is committed to expanding production sustainably, pointing to new traceability systems and deforestation monitoring tools. However, environmental groups say voluntary measures are insufficient and are calling for stronger legal protections for native biomes outside the Amazon.
