Brazil Investigates Discord Over Safety of Young Users
Brazil’s National Data Protection Agency, known as ANPD, has opened an into Discord. The agency wants to know whether the online is doing enough to protect children and teenagers from dangerous content.
The began after reports about the death of a 13-year-old girl in July. According to Agência Brasil, the case involved content connected to self-harm and suicide that was transmitted on Discord. Brazilian police are also investigating the case separately.
The ANPD is now examining Discord’s safety measures for younger users. One question is whether the has effective ways to identify a user’s age. The agency is also looking at how Discord prevents minors from seeing material, how quickly inappropriate content is removed, and when serious cases are reported to authorities.
These questions are connected to Brazil’s ECA Digital, a law created to give children and teenagers stronger protection online. The rules include responsibilities related to age checks and safer settings for young users. The ANPD has said that protecting children and adolescents online is one of its priorities.
Discord says it has already introduced additional protections for Brazilian users. Since March 2026, the company has used stronger default safety settings and an age-assurance system for some features and age-restricted spaces. Adults may be asked to confirm their age through facial age estimation or identification.
The will therefore examine whether these existing systems are and whether Discord has followed Brazilian law. The company was given five business days to provide information about the measures it uses to prevent serious violations involving children and teenagers.
The case is part of a wider discussion in Brazil about how digital platforms should protect younger users while millions of people continue to communicate, play, and build communities online.
